* * *

Edward V was born on 2 November 1470, while his mother was in sanctuary in Westminster Abbey, and was the eldest son of Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville. He was created Prince of Wales in June 1471 and sent to Ludlow Castle in the Welsh Marches in 1473 as notional president of the Council of Wales and the Marches. He was raised there by his uncle Anthony, Earl Rivers.

Edward was just twelve when his father died and he inherited the throne. Rivers was escorting the boy king to London when they were intercepted by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who had been appointed as Protector by Edward IV. Rivers and Sir Richard Grey were taken prisoner and then executed in June 1483. Edward was taken to the Tower of London to prepare for his coronation, and was joined there by his brother Richard. Gloucester then claimed that the princes were illegitimate because Edward IV had been pre-contracted to marry Eleanor Butler before his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville, thus making his marriage to Elizabeth invalid. On 26 June 1483, Gloucester was proclaimed King Richard III.

It is not known what happened to Edward V and his brother, who have gone down in history as “the Princes in the Tower”. They disappeared but two skeletons were found in the Tower of London in 1674 and later examination, in the 1930s, found them to be of two children of about the same ages as the princes. The skeletons were buried in Westminster Abbey.
